What You’ll Learn:
Ivana Bonetti, an Italian-American stand-up comedian hailing from Boston’s North End, isn’t just making waves on stage and social media. She’s redefining resilience and joy while living with type 1 diabetes. In this episode of Chronic Boss Unfiltered, Ivana sat down with host Lilly Stairs to talk about her journey, her roots, and how she balances comedy with chronic illness.
Ivana was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 17, right as she was preparing to go to college to study medicine. The diagnosis came as a shock and forced her to learn carb counting, insulin injections, and a completely new way of living. But instead of letting it stop her, Ivana embraced the challenges with curiosity and humor.
“It gave me a different perspective on medicine,” Ivana shared. “I know what being scared is like. Now I bring that empathy to how I connect with others.”
Growing up in a big Italian family, food is at the heart of Ivana’s life. Navigating diabetes in a culture where pasta, bread, and sweets are abundant wasn’t easy, but her family stepped up with love and support. “It was an adjustment, but everyone adapted. I just have to account for things and take insulin,” she explained.
While pizza and pasta are still very much part of her life, Ivana has developed a deep awareness of nutrition and how to maintain balance without giving up the cultural staples that bring her joy.
While finishing her master’s degree in clinical research, it was Ivana’s father who encouraged her to explore stand-up comedy. “He signed me up for a class at Laugh Boston. I went, loved it, and never looked back.”
At first, she kept her comedy career a secret from her extended family. She even made up a fictional boyfriend named Marco to explain her mysterious absences. Eventually, the truth came out when a relative saw a video of her performance, and the support from her family only grew.
Ivana has since graced major stages like The Apollo and The Laugh Factory and credits much of her success to persistence, community support, and the motivation of honoring her late grandfather by performing on the very bandstand he built.
Ivana doesn’t shy away from talking about diabetes in her comedy. She proudly wears her insulin pump, jokes about “the Beaties,” and connects with other diabetics who find inspiration in her openness.
“I used to hide my pump,” she said. “Now I wear it with pride. It’s part of who I am.”
Her visibility makes a difference. From fellow type 1 diabetics reaching out online to kids in her community learning to say “the Beaties,” Ivana is helping normalize devices and diagnosis, one joke at a time.
Ivana’s skill is clear—she’s a gifted comedian with razor-sharp timing and authenticity. Her superpower? Flexibility. Living with diabetes has made her adaptable and in tune with her body, traits that also serve her on stage when reading the room or shifting with the energy of the audience.
“My pump doesn’t wear me. I wear the pump,” she said. That self-assuredness and quick thinking help her thrive both on stage and off.
To Ivana, being a chronic boss means never letting anything slow her down—not a diagnosis, not a rejection, not even the fear of what others might think. She credits her father, an immigrant who worked his way up to become a pilot, with instilling the belief that nothing should hold you back.
“Chronic illness doesn’t define your limits,” she said. “If someone else can do it, you can do it too.”
